The word “Attar is derived from the Persian word” “Ittar” which means perfume. The production of attar involves the distillation of fragrant plant materials such as flowers, herbs, and spices. This results in a concentrated oil that can be used in small quantities as a perfume.
Attar is a historical perfume and has been used for centuries in Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures. Its history can be traced back to ancient times. References of attar can be found in ancient texts such as Vedas and Ayurvedic treatises.
Attar is a perfume which does not need alcohol to be manufactured. A single drop of attar is enough to last several days.
The use of attar became popular in Islamic culture during the Medieval period. It was often used as a perfume during religious ceremonies.
Under the Mughal Emperor Akbar he spread the use of attar throughout his empire because Emperor Akbar enjoyed the refinement of attar. Queens from the Mughal Empire never left their home without using a rose scented attar.
Attar became popular in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, when European traders began to import the oil from the Middle East and India. Today attar is widely used as a perfume that is unique and long lasting.
